Cultural Heritage

The Fiji pot is a staple of Pacific Island kitchens, built for the everyday cooking that brings families together. Deeper and more versatile than the langri, the Fiji pot has long been used across Fijian, Tongan, Samoan, and other Pacific Island households for boiling, simmering, and slow-cooking the dishes that define home cooking in the islands. From dhal and fish soup to boiled root crops and coconut-based curries, this pot has been at the centre of Pacific mealtimes for generations. Owning one is a practical connection to that everyday tradition.

How to Use

  1. Place the pot on your stovetop or gas burner over medium heat. The aluminium heats up quickly, so there is no need for high heat in most cases.
  2. Add water, coconut cream, or oil before adding your ingredients to prevent sticking.
  3. Use for boiling root crops (taro, cassava, kumala), cooking dhal, fish soups, stews, and rice dishes.
  4. Fit the lid to retain steam and moisture, which speeds up cooking and keeps dishes tender.
  5. Stir regularly when cooking thick dishes like dhal or curry to prevent catching on the base.
  6. Allow the pot to cool before washing — avoid plunging a hot pot into cold water.

Care & Storage

  • Wash with warm soapy water and a soft sponge after each use. Avoid abrasive scrubbers or steel wool, which can scratch and pit the aluminium surface.
  • Rinse well and dry thoroughly before storing to prevent oxidation and water marks.
  • Do not leave food sitting in the pot for extended periods, particularly acidic foods like tomatoes or citrus, as these can react with aluminium over time.
  • Store with the lid slightly ajar to allow air to circulate and prevent moisture build-up inside.
  • A light wipe with a dry cloth before storing will keep the surface looking its best.
