Coconut Kava Spoon – Handcrafted, Sustainable & Perfect for Traditional Kava Preparation

Elevate your kava ritual with this beautifully handcrafted coconut kava spoon, designed for both tradition and practicality. The generous coconut bowl holds the perfect portion of kava, while the smooth wooden handle offers a comfortable, authentic grip that enhances every preparation. Made from sustainable, natural materials, this traditional kava essential brings cultural richness and intention to your kava experience — whether you're a seasoned kava drinker or just beginning to explore Pacific Island traditions.

Cultural Heritage

In traditional Fijian and Pacific Island kava ceremonies, the kava ladle — often crafted from coconut shell — is used to scoop the prepared kava from the tanoa (large communal bowl) into the bilo (drinking cup) for each participant. This simple act of ladling and passing kava is a gesture of respect, hospitality, and community that has been practised across Fiji, Tonga, Vanuatu, and Samoa for generations. Using an authentic coconut kava spoon honours this living tradition.

How to Use

  1. Once your kava has been prepared and strained into the tanoa (kava bowl), use the coconut spoon to gently stir the kava to ensure it is well mixed.
  2. Scoop a generous portion of kava from the tanoa using the coconut bowl of the spoon.
  3. Pour the kava carefully into the bilo (coconut drinking cup) for each participant.
  4. Present the bilo with both hands as a sign of respect in the traditional manner.
  5. Rinse the spoon with clean water between uses if serving multiple rounds.

Care & Storage

  • Rinse with warm water after each use — avoid prolonged soaking as this can cause the coconut shell to crack.
  • Do not use soap or harsh detergents, as the porous coconut shell can absorb chemicals that affect taste.
  • Dry thoroughly after washing and store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
  • Occasionally rub with a small amount of coconut oil to keep the shell and wood handle conditioned and prevent drying or cracking.
