Say goodbye to bland food and hello to mouth-watering, freshly ground flavour. Experience the taste of authenticity with every use.
Cultural Heritage
The Pata Puta (also known as Sill Bata in South Asian households) is a traditional stone grinding tool used for centuries across South Asia, Fiji, and Pacific Island communities. Long before electric blenders, families relied on this heavy stone set to grind fresh spices, chillies, ginger, garlic, and chutneys — unlocking deep, complex flavours that simply cannot be replicated by modern appliances. It remains a cherished kitchen tool passed down through generations.
How to Use
- Before first use: Soak both the sill (flat grinding stone) and bata (cylindrical roller) in water for approximately 2 days to remove any natural stone residue. Rinse thoroughly and dry before use.
- Place the sill on a stable, flat surface — ideally on the floor or a low bench for best leverage.
- Add your spices, herbs, or ingredients to the centre of the sill.
- Using both hands, roll the bata firmly back and forth over the ingredients with steady pressure.
- Gradually work the ingredients into a fine paste or powder, adding a few drops of water if needed to assist grinding.
- Scrape the ground paste from the stone surface with a spatula or spoon and use immediately for the freshest flavour.
Specifications
- Sill dimensions: Length 35.7cm × Width 22.5cm × Height 3.5cm
- Bata dimensions: Diameter 4.5cm × Height 20cm
- Combined weight: 8.65kg
Care & Storage
- Rinse with warm water after each use — avoid soap as it can be absorbed into the porous stone and affect flavour.
- Scrub with a stiff brush to remove any residue, then rinse and air dry completely.
- Store in a dry place. If storing long-term, a light coat of cooking oil on the stone surface will help condition it.
- The stone will naturally season over time, becoming smoother and more effective with regular use.
